The Saint Who Rejoiced at Waiting a Thousand Lifetimes

Long ago, deep inside a peaceful forest in India, there lived a humble saint named Narada Muni who loved to travel across the world spreading wisdom and devotion to Lord Vishnu. During one of his journeys, Narada passed through a quiet grove where he noticed two men performing intense penance under a large banyan tree.

The first man was a strict ascetic. He had been meditating for many years. His body was thin, and his eyes were closed in deep concentration. When he heard Narada Muni’s footsteps, he opened his eyes and said eagerly,

"Great sage! You are the divine messenger of Lord Vishnu. Please tell me - when will I attain liberation?"

Narada Muni smiled gently and said, "I will ask Lord Vishnu and return with the answer."

A little further down the path, Narada met another man. This second devotee was sitting beneath a tree, singing the name of Lord Vishnu with joy. Sometimes he laughed, sometimes he danced, and sometimes he simply gazed lovingly at the sky.

When he saw Narada Muni, he folded his hands respectfully and asked, "O wise sage, if you meet Lord Vishnu, could you please ask when I will attain salvation?"

Narada promised that he would bring the answer.

Soon Narada Muni reached the divine abode of Lord Vishnu and respectfully asked the Lord about the fate of the two devotees.

Lord Vishnu replied, "The first ascetic will attain liberation after four more lifetimes of meditation."

"And the second devotee?" Narada asked.

Lord Vishnu smiled and said, "Tell him he must wait as many years as there are leaves on the tree under which he sits."

Narada Muni returned to the forest and first approached the strict ascetic.

The sage said calmly, "Lord Vishnu has answered your question. You will attain liberation after four more lifetimes."

The ascetic became extremely disappointed. His face turned pale with anger.

"Four lifetimes?!" he cried. "I have already meditated for so many years! How unfair! Why must I wait so long?"

His frustration disturbed his peace, and he began complaining loudly.

Narada Muni then walked further to meet the second devotee who was still joyfully chanting the name of Lord Vishnu.

Narada said, "I have brought your answer from Lord Vishnu. You will attain liberation after as many years as there are leaves on this tree."

The devotee looked up at the tree. It was huge and filled with thousands of leaves.

For a moment Narada wondered how the man would react.

But suddenly the devotee jumped up with joy!

"What wonderful news!" he exclaimed happily. "One day I will definitely attain liberation! Even if it takes thousands of years, it will happen! How kind and merciful Lord Vishnu is!"

He began dancing with gratitude, singing the Lord’s name with even greater devotion.

At that very moment, a divine voice echoed through the forest.

"Because of your unwavering faith and patience, you shall attain liberation right now."

A brilliant light surrounded the joyful devotee, and his soul was instantly freed.

Narada Muni smiled. The devotee's patience, faith, and happiness in devotion had pleased the Lord more than years of strict penance.

From that day onward, Narada often told this story to remind people that true devotion is not measured by time - but by faith and a joyful heart.

Moral

True devotion requires patience and faith. When we accept God's will with joy instead of frustration, blessings come sooner than we expect.
