Bhasmasura and the Deadly Boon: The Story of How Mohini Saved Lord Shiva
Long ago, in the age when gods, sages, and demons walked the Earth, there lived a powerful and ambitious demon named Bhasmasura. His story is one of arrogance, divine compassion, and the clever wisdom of the gods.
The Demon's Terrible Penance
Bhasmasura was not satisfied with ordinary strength. He desired power so great that even the gods would tremble before him. Determined to gain such power, he decided to perform severe penance to please Lord Shiva, the compassionate destroyer of evil.
Deep in a forest, Bhasmasura began his austerities. He stood on one leg for years, meditating on Lord Shiva. He ate nothing, slept very little, and endured scorching heat and heavy rains without moving.
Years passed.
The intensity of his devotion shook the heavens. Finally, Lord Shiva appeared before him in a brilliant burst of light.
"Bhasmasura," Shiva said kindly, "your penance has pleased me. Ask for any boon you desire."
The Dangerous Boon
The demon had been waiting for this moment.
With a wicked smile he said,
"Lord Shiva, grant me the power that if I place my hand on anyone's head, that person will instantly turn into ashes."
Shiva, known for his generosity toward devotees, granted the boon without hesitation.
"So be it," said Shiva.
The moment the words were spoken, Bhasmasura burst into laughter. His eyes gleamed with evil ambition.
"Let me test my new power," he said.
And shockingly, the demon began walking toward Lord Shiva himself.
The Demon Turns Against Shiva
Bhasmasura's true intention became clear.
"If I turn Shiva into ashes," he thought, "no one will be more powerful than me!"
Raising his hand, he tried to place it on Lord Shiva's head.
Realizing the danger of the boon he had granted, Shiva immediately fled. The mighty god who destroys the universe, when necessary, now had to run to save himself from the very power he had given away.
Across mountains, forests, and skies Shiva ran, while Bhasmasura chased him, laughing wildly.
The gods in heaven became terrified. If Shiva were destroyed, cosmic balance itself would collapse.
Vishnu's Brilliant Plan
Seeing the danger, Lord Vishnu decided to intervene.
To defeat the demon, Vishnu transformed into an incredibly beautiful woman - Mohini, the most enchanting form ever seen.
When Bhasmasura saw Mohini, he immediately forgot all about chasing Shiva.
Her beauty was mesmerizing. Her eyes sparkled like stars, and her graceful movements captivated the demon completely.
Mohini smiled and spoke softly.
"O mighty warrior, who are you?"
"I am Bhasmasura," he boasted. "I possess a power greater than any being in the universe!"
Mohini pretended to be impressed.
"Such a powerful hero! But I only marry someone who can dance as gracefully as I do."
The demon eagerly agreed.
The Dance of Destruction
Mohini began a graceful dance. Her movements were elegant and precise.
Bhasmasura tried to imitate every step.
When Mohini raised her right hand, Bhasmasura did the same.
When she spun around, he spun too.
The dance became faster and more complex.
Finally, Mohini performed one last move - she placed her hand on top of her own head.
Without thinking, the foolish demon copied her exactly.
The moment Bhasmasura placed his hand on his head, the power of Shiva's boon activated.
In a flash of fire and smoke - Bhasmasura turned into ashes.
Peace Restored
With the demon destroyed, Lord Vishnu revealed his true form.
Lord Shiva returned and smiled in relief.
The gods praised Vishnu's cleverness and wisdom. The universe was safe once again.
From that day, the story of Bhasmasura became a warning about the dangers of arrogance and misuse of divine power.
