Little Nimai and the Snake
Nimai loved to play around the courtyard of his home. His laughter filled the house with joy, and the neighbors often came just to see the delightful child.
One afternoon, when Nimai was still a toddler, something astonishing happened.
While Nimai was playing alone in the courtyard, a large snake quietly entered the house. In most homes, such a sight would have caused panic, but little Nimai was completely fearless.
Instead of running away, Nimai crawled toward the snake and began playing with it as if it were a toy!
The snake coiled itself on the ground, and the child happily climbed onto it. He laughed and clapped his hands, completely unaware of the danger. To him, it was just another playmate.
When Nimai's mother, Sachi Devi, came outside and saw this sight, her heart almost stopped. Her little child was sitting on a poisonous snake!
She cried out in fear, calling for help. Soon neighbors gathered around the courtyard. Everyone was terrified to move because they feared the snake might harm the child.
But something miraculous happened.
The snake remained completely calm. It did not harm Nimai in any way. Instead, it gently uncoiled itself and slowly began to crawl away.
As the snake left, Nimai tried to follow it, as though he did not want his new "playmate" to go.
The villagers were amazed. They believed that the snake had recognized the divine nature of the child and therefore did not harm him.
Many elders said that this event showed that Nimai was no ordinary child. Some even believed that the snake had behaved like the sacred serpent Shesha Naga who serves Lord Vishnu.
The story spread throughout Nabadwip, and people began to speak of the child Nimai with great reverence.
Years later, that same playful child would grow up to become the great spiritual teacher Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who spread the message of devotion and love through the chanting of the holy name.
