The Story of the Mad Elephant and Gautam Buddha
Long ago, in the ancient city of Rajgir, there lived the great teacher Gautam Buddha, who was known for his compassion, wisdom, and calmness.
However, not everyone admired him. Among those who felt jealous was his own cousin, Devadatta. Devadatta wanted to harm Buddha and take his place as a leader. Blinded by envy, he made a cruel plan.
The Plan of Devadatta
Devadatta arranged for a fierce and uncontrollable elephant named Nalagiri to be set loose on the streets just as Buddha would pass by.
Nalagiri was known for his violent temper. To make matters worse, the elephant was intoxicated and enraged before being released. As he charged through the streets, people ran in terror, shouting warnings:
"Run! The mad elephant is coming!"
Buddha's Calm Courage
When Buddha heard the chaos, his disciples begged him to step aside and save himself. But Buddha remained completely calm.
Instead of running, he stood still in the path of the charging elephant. His heart was filled with kindness and compassion, even for the raging Nalagiri.
As the massive elephant thundered toward him, Buddha slowly raised his hand and radiated deep love and peace.
The Miracle of Compassion
Something extraordinary happened.
As Nalagiri approached Buddha, his anger began to fade. The elephant slowed down, his eyes softened, and his violent energy dissolved.
Finally, Nalagiri came close, bowed his head, and gently knelt before Buddha in submission.
The crowd watched in amazement. A creature that moments ago was full of rage had been transformed - not by force, but by compassion.
Devadatta's Failure
Devadatta's plan had failed. Instead of harming Buddha, the incident only made people admire him even more. They saw the power of peace over anger, and love over violence.
